Created in the laboratory of preeminent Mad Scientist Dr. Eliot Franken (who is also her
father), Frankie Franken is a Creature made from the best parts available. Instead of
chaining her up in a dungeon (a practice that is unfortunately common among Mad
Scientists), Dr. Franken tutored Frankie and raised her as his daughter. A brainy and
good-natured Grrl who is quite literally a model teenager, Frankie is polite, outgoing and
very friendly, with a taste for mysteries and a natural bent for scientific studies. She has
the ability to speak in a rather deep Voice that sounds like this, which is occasionally
disconcerting to people who have just met her, as are her seven-foot-tall height, green
skin, stitches, electrodes, enormous strength and capabilities for storing and
discharging electricity. Frankie is an A+ student and the Grrls' de facto leader.
A 255-year-old vampire who was Turned at the age of sixteen, Bethany Ruthven has
unlived through several lifetimes, but has taken advantage of her somewhat unfortunate
situation to travel the world and learn many things before coming to live in Morlock
Heights (the Grrls' home). An unrepentant iconoclast among vampires, Bethany refuses
to maintain many vampire traditions (such as sleeping in a coffin filled with earth from
her homeland; instead she sleeps in a four-poster bed, thank you very much) and is
often quite sarcastic about the ways of vampires, among other things. Though she
appears sharp-tongued and outspoken, Bethany is actually kindhearted and generous
and will go to great lengths to defend her friends. She has no patience with nonsense
and will give those who cross her the indignity of a thick ear (if not a bitten neck).
The gentle, sweet-natured Punkin Nightshade is an Adept, or natural witch; the first
Adept to come along in many centuries. Possessed of both a shy disposition and an
amazing inborn Power, Punkin handles the pressures of both her birthright and her new
school environment very well. A country-raised Grrl with a pronounced cornpone accent
and good common sense, Punkin has recently become something of an adept at
computers; with the help of reformed computer hacker and boyfriend Stuart Nelson,
Punkin has created the SpellBook, a magical computer that can be used for casting
spells and crunching numbers. Though she is naturally shy and unprepossessing,
Punkin is a dedicated, practicing witch who can be very hard-minded when someone
she loves is in danger, and is not above using her magic to protect them even if she does
worry about losing control of it.
The daughter of Morlock Heights' werewolf Baron, Harriet Von Lupin shares the
strength, humor and bravery of her father. Boisterous and playful, Harriet's outgoing
nature and spirit of adventure sometimes lead to occasional trouble, but she is always
well-meaning. Harriet maintains an ongoing adversarial relationship with Bethany that
occasionally reveals a shared history and a deep, abiding friendship. She is loyal to her
friends and will defend them to the extreme. A natural athlete, Harriet enjoys most
sports (especially basketball) and looks at most things as some form of play. She
occasionally appears to be dimwitted, but she uses this to her advantage, masking a
razor-sharp wit and instinctive cleverness that often surprises her detractors. She is
the Grrls' own "go-to Grrl" and is unable to resist a challenge, especially if there's food
waiting at the end of it.
